Dear Holy Rosary Families and Friends,
The end of the school came in a whirlwind. The first ever baccalaureate mass and senior “roast” went off beautifully. The teachers roasted the students and then presented them with a video of pictures of their time with us. Tears and laughter were shared by seniors, parents, friends, and faculty. We thank Mr. Ed Wassell for returning to join us to speak about the beauty of the classical, Catholic curriculum.
The graduation was held on campus for the first time in over a decade! The entire student body, family, and friends surrounded the seniors as they enjoyed holy mass celebrated by the Dominican priests: Fr. Anthony Patalano, Fr. Augustine Highlander, and Fr. Lukascz as well as Fr. James Barrand of St. Nicholas of Myra. Brother Justin Gable O.P. and our former chaplain, Fr. Fisher were also in attendance. The high school choir sang chant and specific song requests from the seniors. After the mass, the formal graduation program began. Miss Catherine Neumayr spoke briefly and then handed out senior awards. Following that, the seniors gave four of the most touching and eloquent speeches we have heard from HRA seniors. Their love and appreciation of the school, faculty, friends and parents was evident. The seniors were then given their diplomas and walked down a row of all the teachers lined up to congratulate them. Miss Neumayr met them at the end with flowers. Finally, they were able to invite the student body to come and join in consuming cake; each senior had a cake to cut and a chance to visit and enjoy well wishes from the student body. It was a truly memorable graduation. We will miss our beloved seniors so much. You will be gone Margarita, Ashlee, Sean, and Michelle but never forgotten!
The awards ceremony came on the last day of the school. The faculty was so proud to see the incredible number of awards the students received. From Latin to Greek to Mythology awards, the students distinguished themselves nationally. Mrs. Pearce was able to recognize the students athletic accomplishments by awarding the Presidential Fitness awards. Mrs. Maureen Klump honored our student athletes with pins and accolades for their exceptional accomplishments in sports this year. Each grade gave out the Rhetoric, Logic, and Grammar awards. All of these awards will be delineated in another blog. The awards ceremony finished with a ten minute recap of our students and the year. We hope to post this video montage for your enjoyment shortly. Keep an eye out for it on our website.
Immediately after the end of school, the faculty convened for three days of in-service to discuss the year and make plans for next. It was a productive and wonderful step towards continue improvements for the coming year. The teachers finished cleaning their rooms and grades in a timely fashion. On May 31, 2012 we sent the official report cards and scantron test results home to all parents who are current on tuition. The results of Core Knowledge testing in the elementary school will be forthcoming soon.
Many of the faculty and students enjoyed a most beautiful wedding mass and reception with the new Mrs. Katy (Tappel) Morrison. Mr. and Mrs. Morrison were gracious hosts and took great care to host a beautiful mass and a delicious reception. Great fun was had by all. Congratulations to our own Mrs. Morrison!
The school is very excited to host the Bird family who will be moving on campus to fill the apartment previously inhabited by the Shaut family! It will be wonderful to have our former teacher, Mario Bird, and his wife and two sons return to the HRA family.
On Wednesday, June 6, 2012 70 ACYC (Alaska Catholic Youth Conference) will be coming to the campus to work for five hours. Any parent seeking to complete share hours is encouraged to contact Miss Neumayr about overseeing their work. We hope to do a comprehensive cleaning of the campus and begin some summer maintenance that was on the list to be completed. Thank you to our Board member and head of Faith Formation for the Archdiocese, Doug Stewart, for arranging for this much needed help!
Please continue to encourage new families to consider Holy Rosary Academy for their children. We know that HRA provides a superior education in a small setting with an eye towards fostering virtue and excellence in her students. The school is so grateful for your referrals.
Enjoy the sun and the warmth in these early days of summer. Know that the campus is open from 9-4 and that the office is specifically open for business transactions, tours, and visits from 9-noon.
Your remain ever in my prayers,
Miss Catherine Neumayr, Principal
