Dear HRA Families and Friends,
Well, if your child was exhausted this weekend, he or she is certainly justified! We had the most wonderful opening week of school. It was filled with laughter and joy and will go down as one of my favorite first weeks of school. Thank you to the faculty, staff, students, and parents for making the transition so smooth and enjoyable.
We opened the week with an Assembly in the lobby of the Kolbe building. “Super Junior” Jacob Owens led us in morning prayers and our new Choir Director, Mrs. Colleen Duncan, led us in song. The excitement of the students to meet the new faculty and embark on the school year was palpable and heartening to me. The students were appreciative of all the work done to improve and maintain the school facility. Though the heavens rained upon us, I took it as a good omen.
Archbishop Schwietz, Fr. Augustine Highlander O.P., and the new Byzantine priest, Fr. Michael Sidun, con-celebrated the opening school mass on Tuesday. It was a truly peaceful and holy event. The little kindergartners and the new students adjusted immediately to the respectful atmosphere the returning students and faculty foster each week. We were indeed blessed with a beautiful opening mass. At the end of the mass, the Archbishop gave a special blessing to the entire faculty who have signed and taken the Oath of Fidelity to the Teaching Magisterium of the Church and to the Pope.
The rain dropped and dropped but the teachers kept the students’ spirits up by leading engaging classes and playing indoor games with them at recess. Thank you to the whole student body for accepting the weeping heavens with such grace.
Our former principal and teacher, Mrs. Barbara Doerner, had returned to HRA after 3 years to substitute for Mrs. LouAnn Verbout’s kindergarten class. Before she was hired late in the summer, Mrs. Verbout, had planned a trip to see her three daughters. Mrs. Doerner is graciously taking her place for the upcoming week. The kindergartners have already welcomed her to campus. Be sure to stop in and say hello. I know that Mrs. Doerner would love to see old friends. Thank you to HRA parent, Mrs. Kathy Tappel, who is assisting her in the mornings. You both make the classroom so very loving for the new HRA kindergartners! You are an excellent complement to Mrs. Shaut’s happy classroom across the hall. We miss you, Mrs. Verbout, but the students are in good hands!
A huge thank you to the parents and the students for humoring my reservations about going to muddy, slippery Thunderbird Falls this year. I had visions of a child slipping into the river and being swept away. The great blessing of the sun and the wonderful trip to Valley of the Moon park, Westchester Lagoon, and the Coastal Trail, confirmed my decision to stay in town on firm ground. Thank you to all the parents who joined us for this sunny and joy filled end of the week.
Another huge thank you goes out to Dr. John Tappel and Mrs. Maureen Klump who offered free physicals for all of the student athletes of HRA. Thank you for coming on a Saturday morning. I am very, very grateful!
